HIGHLIGHTED CORE LEARNING:

Unfortunately, one of the first, and most important lessons, that children learn is that people are the biggest problem when it comes to protecting our marine world. From litter and pesticides washing into the seas, to drilling for oil that leaks into the oceans, to introduction of non-native species, we have been abysmal stewards of our oceans. While all of these seem like huge problems, which a child will likely feel helpless to affect, it’s appropriate to start small and teach them what they can do. The ocean is a wonderful place to explore with kids! Not only is it fun and fascinating, but learning about the ocean helps children develop a care and concern for it as well. The ocean covers 70% of the Earth’s surface and is the home to a large portion of Earth’s living creatures.  Additionally, the oceans are an integral part of the water cycle that brings rain to our fields and forests, as well as drinking water to our homes; and produces much of the oxygen the we need to live. In developing and understanding of the ocean ecosystem and it’s different parts, children will learn the importance of taking care of our oceans and marine life, and living in a way that reflects that.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Protect biodiversity and ocean life by actively engaging and inspiring the public through citizen science, education, and partnerships with the scientific community.
  • To lead political, cultural and social change for healthy seas and coasts that support abundant marine wildlife, sustainable livelihoods and enjoyment for all.
