EDAKKAL CAVESStudy about Pre-Historic Civilization, Stone Age Carvings, and Petroglyphs Date Backs to Over 8000 Years is the attractions of the place.  Three big boulders stand to make the cave.  We can see writings in the cave date back to the Neolithic and Mesolithic age.  The Trek to the caves is exiting with thick foliage of coffee plantations and other plants around.

The caves were discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district in 1890, during his hunting trip to Wayanad. He discovered the Edakkal rock-shelter, situated on the western side of Edakkalmala. To his surprise, he identified the place as a habitat of Neolithic people.

Edakkal caves are famous for its pictorial paintings (cave paintings), which are considered to be of 6000 B C. To reach the caves, one has to trek through the Ambukutty Mala. It will take around 45 minutes to climb the hill and you will never get disappointed in your trip to these historic caves.

Inside the cave, you can see two chambers. The lower chamber is 18 ft long, 12 ft wide and 10 ft high and the upper chamber is 96 ft long, 22 ft wide and 18 ft high. You can sight carvings of human, animal figures and objects used by humans, on the walls of the caves. These carvings give great evidence for a highly civilized society who lived in the pre-historic age. Edakkal caves have drawn great attention of archeologists and historians worldwide.

SOOCHIPPARA FALLS – Study on effective utilization of natural resources-one will be guided to have an understanding of the source of water and how effectively it could be used in solving the drinking water problem of the local community if used effectively. Soochipara Falls (Sentinel Rock Waterfalls) is perhaps the most picturesque spot located in the periphery of Wayanad. It is a treat for eyes to see the milky white stream of water making its way to the rivers by passing through the rocky cliffs and clinging trees. The waterfall at the end joins Chaliyar River. You will have to trek for around 30 minutes in downward inclination to reach the main pool, where exciting activities like swimming, bathing, and other recreational activities take place now and then. While walking towards the main pool of the waterfall, visitors can see a tea plantation, rocky edge and dense forest where the chances of spotting a tiger are quite bright

MUTHANGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY – It is a sanctuary of rare Flora and Fauna, their interdependency can be studied here. We can know how wildlife sanctuary provides security to animals, plants and also the Adivasi community who do not want to leave their settlements in the wild. It provides an opportunity for the visitors to study the attractions of the place and the need to preserve nature in its natural form.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The management lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration for the general lifestyle of the tribals and others who live in and around the forest region. The Sanctuary has a large population of pachyderms and has been declared a Project Elephant site.

Elephants roam freely here and tigers are sighted occasionally as well. Various species of deer, monkeys, and birds also live here. The Reserve is also home to a profusion of birds, butterflies, and insects. The trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of the south Indian moist deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests

POOKODE LAKE - Study on effective utilization of natural resources and conservation of the natural freshwater lake. Get to experience a surreal encounter with nature. The dense forests and tall trees which surround the pathway provide you with adequate shade from the sun.

The beautiful freshwater lake Pookode Lake lays 15 kilometers away from Kalpetta. Nestled between evergreen forest and the Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acres and is 40 m deep.

While reaching this gorgeous lake, you will be experiencing a calm and peaceful environment around. The lake is surrounded by forest and you will see green and green all around, making this place an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers. One of the main tributaries of Kabini River, the Panamaram rivulet originates from here.

The perennial freshwater lake has the shape of an Indian map. You can sight blue lotus and numerous freshwater fishes. Bluewater lilies also can be seen scattered here and there in the water. The sight of wild animals and birds in the surrounding forest of the lake is another attraction of this destination. Plenty of monkeys are also seen here. Pethia Pookodensis is a species of cyprind fish, which is said to be found here only.
