Natural systems and human innovation work together and influence how societies function, adapt, and use resources sustainably.
HOW THE WORLD WORKS
Systems • Scientific & Technical Innovation • Change • Sustainability • Limits
Age Group: MYP 4 (13–15 years)
Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights – Residential Programme
Venue: Munnar & Cochin – Hill Ecosystems, Water Systems, Biodiversity Zones & Coastal Environments
Learning Style: Inquiry-led • Systems-based • Evidence-driven • Reflective
Includes: Pre-Tour Learning • On-Tour Field Inquiry • Post-Tour Reflection & Synthesis
This experiential learning programme helps students understand how natural systems and human-made systems function and interact. Students explore agriculture, water management, sound, biodiversity, marine systems, and coastal livelihoods using real environments as learning spaces.
Rather than studying systems separately, students observe, compare, and explain how systems work, what makes them useful, and where problems or limits appear. Learning focuses on cause-and-effect relationships, system comparison, and sustainability using evidence from hill, forest, and coastal regions.
Thinking Skills
System comparison • Cause and effect • Identifying strengths and limitations
Research Skills
Field observation • Mapping • Pattern identification • Evidence recording
Communication Skills
Clear explanation • Discussion • Reflection
Self-Management Skills
Responsibility • Safety awareness • Reflective practice
• How does this system work?
• What makes it useful or effective?
• Where does it create problems or limits?
• Is it sustainable over time, and for whom?
Students use these questions at every site.
