“Ways of Living: Culture, Place, and Community Identity” is an inquiry-driven experiential learning programme designed for MYP students, using Goa’s coastal and island communities as a living classroom to explore how culture is expressed through everyday life, traditions, and shared practices.
Through structured pre-tour inquiry framing, immersive on-site experiences across fishing villages, mangrove ecosystems, heritage spaces, and community settings, and guided post-tour reflection, students investigate how people express identity through food, work, architecture, music, rituals, and interaction with their environment.
Key learning experiences include engagement with traditional fishing communities, exploration of local food practices such as cashew roasting, observation of coastal and island lifestyles at Chorao, visits to historic forts and churches reflecting Portuguese influence, and guided interactions that reveal how culture is lived, performed, and sustained.
The programme supports learners in understanding that culture is dynamic and deeply connected to place, history, and community values. By observing cultural expressions, participating respectfully in local practices, comparing traditions across contexts, and reflecting on identity and values, students develop empathy, cultural literacy, communication skills, and a deeper appreciation of diversity.
The programme is aligned with IB MYP philosophy and is intentionally structured across Pre-Tour, On-Tour, and Post-Tour phases, enabling students to connect inquiry with experience and reflection with meaningful cultural understanding.
Students develop Thinking, Research, Communication, Social, and Self-Management skills as they observe cultural practices, ask inquiry-driven questions, document experiences through journaling and discussion, collaborate during group activities, manage responsibilities during travel, and reflect on cultural identity and expression.
