Subject Focus: Cambridge IGCSE Physics & Biology

Venue: Discovate – Experiential Science & Innovation Zone
Programme Type: Full-Day Scientific Field Investigation
Age Group: 15–16 years

Programme Overview

This full-day scientific investigation uses Discovate as a live laboratory for analysing physical, biological and technological systems. The visit is structured around observation, variable analysis, mechanism explanation and evaluative reasoning. Students investigate how systems operate, how variables influence outcomes and how innovation shapes human interaction with technology.

The academic focus is on:

• Cause and effect relationships
• Identification of independent and dependent variables
• Mechanism-based explanation
• Application of scientific terminology
• Evaluation of technological design

Students are required to move beyond experience and demonstrate structured explanation using scientific reasoning.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

• Identify components within physical and biological systems
• Analyse how variables affect system performance
• Explain mechanisms using accurate scientific terminology
• Evaluate technological innovation in terms of safety and effectiveness
• Construct structured scientific explanations supported by evidence

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will be able to:

• Identify at least four systems observed during the visit
• Distinguish between independent and dependent variables
• Explain two clear cause–effect relationships
• Use appropriate scientific vocabulary in written responses
• Evaluate one technological system using structured criteria
