Theme: Exploring Animals as Nature Detectives
Venue: Bannerghatta National Park (Zoo + Butterfly Park)
Duration: Half Day Educational Visit
Big Idea:
Animals and insects can be understood by observing their colours, movements, sounds and habitats in nature.
This experiential visit is designed for CBSE Grade 1 students to explore animals and butterflies through direct observation and guided inquiry. As Nature Detectives, students engage in simple tasks like spotting colours, identifying movements, and counting living things in a real-world environment.
Through structured exploration, movement-based activities, discussion and drawing, students learn by seeing, listening, thinking, speaking and creating. The experience encourages curiosity, builds early scientific thinking, and strengthens connections with the natural world.
The programme integrates Environmental Studies, English and Mathematics in an age-appropriate and engaging format. It develops foundational skills in observation, communication, comparison, counting and responsible behaviour in public spaces, aligned with CBSE expectations and the vision of NEP 2020.
Environmental Studies (EVS)
• Observe animals and insects in their natural or adapted environments
• Identify basic characteristics such as size, movement and habitat
• Develop awareness of living things and their surroundings
English
• Listen carefully and respond to simple instructions
• Describe animals, colours and movements using simple sentences
• Express thoughts and observations verbally
Mathematics
• Count objects (animals, butterflies) up to 5
• Compare sizes (big and small)
• Recognise simple patterns and numbers
Competency-Based Education
Students apply classroom learning to real-life observation and exploration.
Experiential and Practical Learning
The majority of the experience is hands-on, observation-driven and interactive.
21st Century Skills Development
• Curiosity through exploration of animals and insects
• Critical thinking through guided observation questions
• Communication through sharing and discussion
• Collaboration through pair and group activities
Multidisciplinary Approach
Integration of EVS, language and numeracy within one meaningful learning experience.
Project-Based Learning Foundation
Post-visit reflections and activities reinforce learning through simple application tasks.
Students will be able to:
• Identify animals and insects based on observation
• Recognise colours, patterns and movements in nature
• Count and compare living things
• Express observations using simple words and sentences
• Demonstrate safe and responsible behaviour during outdoor visits
By the end of the visit, students will:
• Share at least one observation about an animal or butterfly
• Identify basic colours and movements seen in nature
• Count a small number of animals or insects accurately
• Demonstrate understanding of simple differences like big and small
• Follow instructions and behave responsibly in a public environment
