The Cauvery Chronicles is a Grade 9 experiential learning journey connecting nature, geography, history and heritage. Students explore the Cauvery at Bharachukki, decode Hoysala architecture at Somanathapura, and investigate Talakadu’s changing historical landscape. Through observation, field exploration and reflection, students discover how nature shapes civilisation, while human creativity and culture leave lasting stories behind.

HOW WE DELIVER OUTCOMES

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM: This one-day experiential learning programme is designed to help Grade 9 students explore the relationship between nature, geography, history, architecture and heritage conservation through three remarkable landscapes of Karnataka. The journey moves from the natural processes of the Cauvery at Bharachukki, to the architectural brilliance of the Hoysala heritage at Somanathapura, and finally to the changing historical landscape of Talakadu. Through observation, field exploration and reflection, students discover how nature shapes civilisation and how civilisation leaves its stories behind in heritage.

OBJECTIVE: To enable students to understand how the Cauvery river system, natural landscapes, human settlements, architecture and cultural heritage are interconnected. The programme encourages students to observe geographical processes, investigate historical evidence, understand architectural craftsmanship and reflect on the importance of heritage conservation.

WHY IT MATTERS: Landscapes are shaped by nature, but they also influence how people live, build, create and preserve their history. By exploring a waterfall ecosystem, a Hoysala temple and a historically transformed settlement, students understand how rivers, geography, human activity and time interact to create cultural landscapes.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME: Students explore three interconnected dimensions of Karnataka's natural and cultural heritage:

  • Bharachukki Falls: Investigate the Cauvery river system, erosion, waterfall formation, biodiversity, freshwater dependence and responsible tourism.
  • Somanathapura – Keshava Temple: Explore Hoysala architecture through its star-shaped design, intricate stone craftsmanship, sculptural narratives, geometry, engineering and historical significance.
  • Talakadu: Discover the relationship between the Cauvery River, human settlements, sand deposition, ancient temples, folklore, cultural memory and heritage conservation.

LEARNING TAKEAWAY: Students return with the ability to:

  • Understand how the Cauvery shapes landscapes and human settlements.
  • Recognise key features of Hoysala architecture and craftsmanship.
  • Interpret architecture and sculptures as evidence of history and culture.
  • Understand how geographical processes transform historical landscapes.
  • Connect nature, history, architecture and cultural heritage through real-world observation.
